These are answers to 12 questions for the telegraph interview.
This post is for Dhaval Desai and will be removed in 48hours.

1. You are known to be very comfortable with the latest film-making gadgets. How has that helped you as a film-maker?

Subrata Mitra one of the worlds greatest cinematographers was my Guru. He was a geek even before the word was invented. He was a painter, a calligraphist, an accomplished sitar player, photographed the greatest films of Satyajit Ray and could take apart an Arriflex Motion Picture Camera and put it back blindfolded.

He was the perfect balance between art, expression and technology. I try in my own limited way to strive towards that.
I love technology but am not it’s slave. For me story is most important. People, emotions and expressions are the heart of what I do and am interested in when making films. Technology is a way to get to my audiences.

2. Would you say technology is opening doors for newcomers?

When one looks at the young participants of 24x7 the thing that hits you is how central technology has become in our lives. And to a large extent how it democratizes life.
More than technology, the business of filmmaking has high barriers of entry. You need a godfather, a grandfather, a patron saint, public funds and so on. Not everyone can get to make a film. And my simple question was WHY NOT? What if we threw the doors open to everyone?
And when I asked Apple and Panasonic their answer was, “when do we begin?”

3. How tough was the challenge of completing a film in 24 hours? Was it Mission Impossible or are there instances of people achieving it elsewhere in the world, in your knowledge?

The most important point here is that before the participants pick up the camera they are not filmmakers! It’s AFTER the 24 hours that they become a filmmaker. It is the most intensive process on all fronts. Incubating their ideas, mentoring them, workshopping with them and then pushing them out in the world to make their film. A filmmaker is born in 24 hours!

Most feature films take years to complete. At best one might make a film in a year. But only a handful of filmmakers worldwide can do that. So to make a film in 24 hours is really, really tough. It’s even tougher when you consider that most of the people taking part have had little or no experience in filmmaking.

Ashutosh Gowarikar told me that, “established filmmakers should be told to make a film in 24hours. It would free them and clear the cobwebs in their minds.”
Which is the philosophy behind my idea. How can we break free of the old ways of telling stories, the old ways of making films, the old ways of sharing our ideas and do this in an instant. How can we see the world through the eyes and minds and hearts of the young generation.

4. What kind of people applied? Especially the odd balls…

This is the beauty of the program. Anyone can take part. We’ve had people from all walks of life who have taken part. From all parts of the country and some from overseas as well. There have been people studying Hotel Management, some going to a flight academy, someone who wanted to walk a dog, the list is endless and never ceases to amaze us. It’s made me realise how important movies are to our lives, and how eager and desperate the young generation are to share their lives with others.

5. What were your criteria for choosing the final 35? For instance, if someone had a brilliant script but had no clue about how to run a camera, what did you do with him?

The idea is central. It has to be original. That’s the one thing my team and I look at. It’s does not matter if you have never seen or held a camera in your life. The big question is; Do you have something interesting to say? Do you have something original? Do you have a burning desire to tell a story?

6. Do tell us about the event, what was the infrastructure provided and where?

The program was held at the Fame Multiplex in Malad. Apple Computers from California gave us their latest and state of the art Intel processor Mac computers with their professional Final Cut Studio software. This is the same software used in multimillion dollar Hollywood films like the Nicole Kidman starrer Cold Mountain. Panasonic from Japan gave us their latest and state of the art digital camera’s. The multiplex gave us one of their regular screens to show the films as soon as they were made. Hungama Mobile has been key in getting the films a global distribution from day 1 and that is a huge achievement. It has been world class infrastructure for people with no qualifications or previous backgrounds in filmmaking. That I think is a reflection of what each of these world level companies feel about this program.

7. How chaotic was it all

Filmmaking has to be chaotic. Through chaos arises order, patterns and things of great beauty. I’d be panicking if things were not chaotic. But that does not mean things were disorganized. We had a team of young volunteers who did an amazing job of managing the workflow, accompanying all the filmmakers on location when they were filming as well a full technical backup support from Apple, Panasonic as well as editors and technical crew from the film industry all at hand in case there were any issues which needed to be resolved.

8. A word on the quality; wd help if you take specific examples.

Quality is so relative. What is good for one person is awful for another. In 24x7 quality is never the issue. It has never been. That’s NOT what we are looking at. 24x7 is about the voice of the new generation. It’s a glimpse at the future of filmmaking where the rules of the game are completely different. It would go against the spirit and philosophy for me to apply my standards of quality.
But when you do see the films and you think for a moment that these people have NO background in filmmaking AND they have made this in 24hours you would be amazed.
So were Yash Chopra, Sudhir Mishra, Aziz Mirza, Manmohan Shetty when they saw the films. Whenever Aziz sees me he keeps repeating, “24x7, amazing movies, amazing!” Clearly it struck in chord in him.

9. Since this would definitely go to print after the 30th what impressed you about the winning entry?

What impresses me each time over the last three years that I have been running this is that the films get made! That the story telling is clear and by and large the films entertain and make us think. That the audiences react and respond to these films. They discuss and debate these films at length after the screenings like they would any other film.

The winning entries keep getting better and better each year and that’s what is impressive. The story telling is sophisticated, the young people are willing to take risks that no one else would.

Before each event I panic. I worry that no one will be able to make a film under the constraints set out. I have nightmares that people will laugh at us and the whole thing will be seen as a bad joke.
But when the image falls on the screen and the people respond to it, you have to see the expression on the face of the filmmaking team. It’s beyond words. And that’s what keep making us do this year after year.

10. How did you rope in Farhan as a judge amid this Don publicity

Yes that was amazing, especially as it was the time leading up to the release of his new film. I told Farhan about 24x7 and his instant response was, “when do you want me to come?” And the same goes for the rest of the jury; Nandita Puri, Meenakshi Shedde and Mayank Shekhar. Nandita was flying out that same night to Morocco with Om Puri where they were joining Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts and yet she came and spent over 6 hours with the rest of the Jury watching the films, discussing, debating and arguing about them in depth. And the best was their criteria for judging was no different from the way they would look at films made by accomplished filmmakers.

11. Was it an unexpected bonanza when one one of the films from here was chosen for Cannes last year? Did the boy get to attend the show? How was the response?

When The Mud Island made it to the Cannes Short List we realised we were onto something. The international response to 24x7 Making Movies from Variety magazine, Cannes Film festival and others has been that this is one of the most interesting and exciting development in Indian cinema.

12. Finally, what are you working on now personally?

A screenplay I wrote titled Road, Movie was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The film is being produced by one of the hottest producers in America who has produced the films of Sophie Copolla and has been nominated twice for an Academy Award. We are looking at a shoot early 2007. Then there’s my passion project which is on the life of the genius Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. I’ve been wanting to tell this story for the last 20 years. We are leaders in technology today only because of Ramanujan and we all owe it to him.
There’s a cinematic adaptation of Kiran Nagarkar’s book Ravan & Eddie. The screenplay was selected amongst ten worldwide for a famous workshop in Europe presided by Academy Award winner Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale) and Upamanyu Chatterjee and I are in discussions over adapting two of his novels for the screen.

Here is a profile of the winners of 24x7 Making Movies program held in Bombay in October 2006

The Jury selected three films for the main awards:
The films listed in alphabetical order of the maker are:

Anish Soman- JUST A FILM

Anish is our star animator whose ‘Mud Island’ managed to get the attention of the Cannes Committee in the 2004 24x7 at IFFI Goa. This time too he has managed to impress all of us with his simple style and powerful film. He has done his course in Animation from ZICA and ICAAT in Mumbai and though he’s from Kerala he only speaks Hindi! More importantly he has done 2-D animation and says his dream is to make a shift of one more dimension!

Chandrashekhar Kamble- TRING TRING

Chandrashekhar Kamble is a super confident curly haired chap who has managed to make us laugh with his film about a cell phone creating havoc amidst a group of technologically unaware villagers. With a background from JJ School of Art, Mumbai he will take his curly hair and the brains below them to the prestigious Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) where he has finally made it after a very anxious wait of a month.

Mahashweta Burma- GHUTAN

This girl came twice . We saw twice. And she has conquered twice.
She’s all of 18 but her short films are far more mature than what her age would lead you to expect. In the 2004 24x7 at IFFI Goa, it was about the rape of pristine beaches by us who litter it with garbage. This time she has taken on child abuse in a simple, powerful and profound way. A 2nd year BA Program student at the St. Stephens college Delhi this could be the beginning of a great career in filmmaking.

A Special Jury Award was given to:

Md Ali Rukadikar- JUST A MOMENT

In 2004 he made a powerful film about the ravaging obsession for drugs for which he won one of the top awards. This time he has created a truly brilliant concept based film where for Just A Moment two very different lives meet and are changed forever. This tall alternative rock afficionado is now working at a production house that makes advertisements. His fan video for the paki band JAL can be found at YouTube!

In the category 24x7 FREE for people above the age of 24 the Jury gave a Special Award to:

Neha Raheja Thakkar - ERASED

She gave up on architecture to make a decision to shift to advertising. Her film Erased is about a street kid who has just hit puberty and shows his obsession for a heroine on a poster. Neha plans to move from advertising to video art and art installations.

a few details and some tips for the participants . . . .

Dear Participant,

A note to give you a few details and some tips which I hope will help.

What we NEED FROM YOU

1. We need stamp-sized photographs of your Core Team for the Photo IDs. The Core Team includes – you, your editor and whoever will be assisting you on your edit and needs 24 hours access to the 24x7 Hub at the multiplex.

The Core Team will get Photo-IDs.
The other members of your team will get a temporary entry pass if they wish to attend on a particular day for a short while - the screening of the films etc.
The photographs should be passed on to us at least one day before the workshop date, at the pre-registration counter, between 11am & 1 pm and 4pm & 7pm. The counter will open on 23rd September. Out-of-town participants can hand over the photograph on the day of the workshop.

2. Please email us as soon as possible the names of the members of your team. Please mention the part they play in your team - Director / Editor / Cameraman / Assistant / Scriptwriter / Actor. Also tell us which of them are part of your Core Team and require Photo IDs
_______________________________

EQUIPMENT & SOFTWARE – you will work with.

1. Camera: MiniDv Camcorder – Panasonic AG-DVX102B

2. Editing: Final Cut Pro (FCP ) editing software from Apple.

3. The equipment will be at the 24x7 Hub at Fame Multiplex, 24th September onwards.
_______________________________

SOME TIPS:
We do hope you are working on the following aspects or at least giving them some thought.

1. Screenplay – though you have already submitted your screenplay/ script we hope you are still mulling over it.
Think about your characters and characterization; how the screenplay is unfolding; the logic in the story - is the story convincing; has it captured the mood of the story; the beginning, end and climax of the film etc. etc.

2. Music: if you are planning to use music, make sure it is not copyright protected. You are free to even record your music beforehand if you have friends who are musicians.

3. Locations: make sure you have identified the locations - take into account the traveling time. The locations should ideally NOT be too far apart, since the traveling time will eat into the shooting time.

4. Actors/Casting: cast your characters well. Once you are done with casting, rehearse the script with your actors. This will allow you to not only test the ability of your actors but also the effectiveness of your script and dialogues.

5. Time-line: divide the 24 hours between your shoot and edit optimally. Ideally the shooting time should be 8 to 10 hours (including travel time) and 14 to 16 hours for editing (picture edit, sound + music track-laying, titles).
Work out your shoot schedule carefully. The locations you decide on, should ideally be close to each other. to save on travel time.

Call for Actors: If you are an Actor and would like to act in one or more of the films . . . .

35 short fiction films will be made
5 films every day for a week
starting 1st October 2006, at the 24x7 Program.

The participants are young creative people, who have something new to say, in a fresh, innovative style.

If you are an Actor and passionate about acting, you may wish to act in one or more of the films.

You would wish to act in these film because:
- the participants are young, up & coming filmmakers, with interesting stories to tell;
- it is an opportunity for you to show-case your talent;
- and if you are a veteran actor, you may wish to support new talent;
- the filmmakers will be mentored by renowned filmmaker, Mr. Dev Benegal;
- each film will be shot in not more than 8 to 12 hours - that is all the time that you will need to commit;
- the films will all be shown on the big screen at the Fame Multiplex as soon as they are made;
- the films will be sent to film festivals, both national and international.

If you are interested, please write back to entries@24x7makingmovies.com with your CV and photographs, and we will try and put you in touch with the filmmakers. Please mention ‘Actors - 24x7′ in the subject column of your mail.

Schedule
- Pre-production:
The filmmakers will begin interacting with the actors during the workshops, 25th Sept onwards, at the Fame Multiplex, where they will be casting and working out the production details of their films. The exact time and date will be put up on the website.

- Production:
The films are being made in 24 hours flat - that is about 8 to 12 hours for shooting and the balance for editing and completing the film. The filmmaking week is between 1st Oct to 8th Oct 2006

- Screening:
Films made each day, will be screened the following day.

The entire event takes place at the Fame Multiplex, at the InOrbit Mall in Malad, Mumbai. The films will of course be shot at locations the filmmakers choose - not at the multiplex.

Please go through the rest of the website to know more about the program.

Please Note:
- We are only helping create a platform to bring the actors and filmmakers together.
- The casting is entirely up to the filmmakers themselves.
- If you expect any fees, you may discuss this directly with the filmmakers. However considering that most of them are students, it is unlikely that they will be able to afford any payment.

Screenplay tips from Dev Benegal . . .

Congratulations!
The team at 24x7 has loved your ideas and the stories you want to share with the world.
At this point you must be working on your scripts and polishing your stories.

Here are a few things we’d like you to keep in mind;
I’m going to keep this simple.

1. Please SHOW us what happens.
2. Let us SEE how events unfold in the lives of your characters.
3. If they are happy or sad do NOT tell us they are happy or sad.
4. SHOW us a detail or something that happens to them which conveys this to the audience.
5. Write in the active tense. This will help you.

Keep it simple.

The best entries we have received are the ones where the idea is simple.
Don’t worry. The best movies are the ones with simple stories.

That’s it!

So here’s an example I just made up:

Agastya Sen steps onto the platform.
He looks around.
The station is tiny. The sign reads Madna.
He can’t see anyone.
He’s all alone.
In his jeans and t-shirt Agastya is totally out of place.

But don’t write it like a novel:

Agastya Sen was lost on the platform. He wondered if someone was going to come and meet him. He wasn’t sure how he would get to the rest house. These thoughts overwhelmed his mind.

(I’ve made that up as well and it’s not from the novel. Which is my favourite!)

Animators:

Please send us your story boards. Not the whole movie just the KEY FRAMES.
They should be small jpeg Not larger than 1024x768 or 720x576.
Send us your script as well.
Tell us what visual style you will adopt.
Will you use paint, crayons, chalk, clay, digital or some new style and technique we have never heard of.

Whatever it is TAKE RISKS. Be ORIGINAL. Do something NO ONE is doing!

All the best,
Dev Benegal
